Homeless kids are often sleeping on someone’s living room floor, in the car with their parents or in a shelter.
Homeless kids are instructed to hide the fact that they are homeless from their teachers. The teachers can usually tell though.
This year, you may want to approach your child’s teacher and offer fresh kids’ underwear and socks, perhaps a few hand me downs. Underwear and socks are the hardest things to keep clean. A lot of times people end up throwing away dirty underwear rather than trying to figure out how to wash it all or keep enough clothing on hand to make it worthwhile to go to the laundromat.
Extra snacks, bottled water, laundry detergent and fresh fruit are always appreciated as well. These are things that the teacher could quietly pass on to the students that she knows have struggling families. Be well, and may you and your children prosper!
